Why is Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee so much more expensive than other Caribbean coffees?

Why is Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee so much more expensive than other Caribbean coffees?

Q. In the US, Blue Mountain Coffee costs $30-$50/lb. What makes it so expensive?

A. Import/export fees and because it's the best coffee ever. This coffee has developed a reputation that has made it one of the most expensive and sought-after coffees in the world.
Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is a globally protected certification mark meaning that only coffee certified by the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica can be labeled as such.
It comes from a recognised growing region in the Blue Mountain region of Jamaica where are some of the highest mountains in the Caribbean. The climate of the region is cool and misty with high rainfall. The soil is rich with excellent drainage. This combination of climate and soil is considered ideal for coffee. Traditionally, only coffee grown at elevations between 3,000 and 5,500 feet (1,700 m) could be called Jamaica Blue Mountain.

BTW,I went to Jamaica and paid only $16. for a 2-lb bag. Jablum brand is the most expensive and the best.

Does really good quality coffee taste delicious without cream and sugar?
Q. I love coffee. But regular black coffee has an unpleasant bitter taste. I add cream and sugar in coffee because it tastes nasty without them and its unpleasant bitterness.

Have you tried Blue Mountain coffee brand imported from Jamaica? How was it? This coffee is hand picked from the high elevations. What other coffee brands do you consider are best qualities?

A. Roasting coffee involves caramelizing the sugar in the beans. As the bean gets darker, the sugar burns creating a bitter brew. Lighter roasts will have more of the origin flavor (subtleties) as well as the sugar.

I like medium (City to City+) roasts. They tend to have more variety & natural sweetness. That's why I don't like Starbucks; they only have very dark (burnt) roasts.

I buy green beans from Sweet Maria's. I like variety, so I buy many & alternate what I roast.

Right now I have:
Ethiopian
Zimbabwean
Several Hawaiian (esp. Kona)
and multiple decaf espresso blends

That & six ways to brew means never getting tired of the experience. It should always be ground right before brewing (I don't grind till the water's almost boiling).

If it doesn't taste good black, it's probably not a good cup. Like good Scotch, you need to be able to appreciate it.

Who owns jamaica blue mountain coffee?
Q. Im wondering who currently owns Jamaica blue mountain coffee?

A. Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica has a very tight control on export. They are strict about certification, and every barrel has to be inspected / certified by CIBOJ. Japanese own a very large share of crops. I heard as much as 70%. The largest coffee estates are Maven and Wallenford. Then you have brands that import / resell / package / roast, etc. Jablum is a popular one. I personally love My Soul Cafe 100% Pure (www.mysoulcafe.com). Although, if you're price conscious, My Soul Cafe Blue Mountain Blend is also excellent! I know that they roast in small batches, which is why it is always delivered freshly roasted. Be careful of those brands that don't have the official CIBOJ seal. They may not be certified, which means you may get like "one bean" of Jamaica Blue Mountain in your bag. There are scams on ebay too. Magnum's Blue Mountain Blend that Costco sells is AWFUL!!!

Joy is an instructional assistant in one of the college labs. She is on a very tight budget. She loves Jamaica?
Q. Joy is an instructional assistant in one of the college labs. She is on a very tight budget. She loves Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, but it costs $10 a pound. She decides to blend this with regular coffee beans that costs $1.08 a pound. If she spends $14.25 on 2 pounds of coffee, how many pounds of each did she purchase?

A. set up 2 equations

for this problem, R is regular coffee and J is Jamacian Blue

R+J=2
total pounds of R+total pounds of J=2

10R+1.08J=14.25
(R pounds of regular cofee X $10/lb) + (J pounds of jamacian coffee X 1.08/lb)= $14.25

you need to isolate one of the variables
R=2-J
now plug that into the other equation
10(2-J)+1.08J=14.25

20-10J + 1.08J= 14.25

20-8.92J=14.25
subtract 20 both sides

-8.92J=-5.75

divide by -8.92

.64 lbs of Jamacian Coffee
substitute that into first equation
.64+R=2
subtract .64
1.36 lbs of R coffee
